What's Inside

Every BAR OF HOPE product is a labour of love and a result of months of meticulous research, formulating, testing and tweaking, all to provide you with a clean indulgence by turning your ordinary daily hygiene tasks into extraordinary experiences.

Fundamental to this are the ingredients in all BAR OF HOPE products: all natural and from sustainable suppliers.

Our ingredients are listed and described below so you can be sure to enjoy every moment of the clean indulgence, and keep a clear conscience.

Oils and butters are the building blocks of natural soap. When combined with lye, a chemical reaction occurs, the result of which is a cleansing salt compound we know as soap. We 'superfat' all our soaps to ensure there are always pure oils and butters left in them once this chemical process is finished, to nourish and soften your skin after a clean. See the FAQs if you are interested in more information.

  • Olive Oil (Oleate): deeply nourishing and moisturising for the skin. It is one of the 'traditional' soap oils used in the Castile and Aleppo soaps.

  • Coconut Oil (Cocoate): the benefits of coconut oil are many! Its highly effective cleansing power is impressive, and the super bubbling quality adds to the fun. Because coconut oil is so effective at cleansing, it is important to over-compensate with additional oils/butters to increase the 'superfat' levels, which ensures your clean skin also stays velvety soft. BAR OF HOPE is proud to source all its coconut oil from Pure Coco, a family owned and operated small business based in New Zealand, working directly with villages in Fiji and Asia.

  • Castor Oil (Ricinoleate Oil): a great bubble stabiliser, also gives soap a creamy texture.

  • Shea Butter (Butyrospermum Parkii Butter): other than being intensely nourishing for your skin, an important quality of shea butter is that it moisturises deeply without clogging pores with oil. Shea butter is most similar in composition to human skin (after animal fats) so it's highly compatible and one of the reasons why it works so well to nourish.

  • Rice Bran (Ricate Oil): rich in vitamin E and highly moisturising with a low cleansing value so when combined with coconut oil, it makes for a balanced soap.

  • Cocoa Butter (Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter): high in antioxidants which can protect skin from premature ageing, as well as being moisturising. Adds a great hardness to soap.

  • Babassu (Orbignya Oleifera Seed Oil): oil of the babassu nut, which comes from the babassu palm native to the Amazon Rainforest, has the benefits of coconut oil but is lightweight, non-greasy and comedogenic.

  • Sweet Almond Oil (Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil): rich in vitamins A, D & E, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, incredible for dry & flaky skin relief.

  • Kokum Butter (Garcinia Indica Seed Butter): one of the most impressive skin-loving butters, it is is regenerative, anti-fungal, antioxidant, anti-ageing, non-comedogenic, plus it absorbs quickly and easily with no leftover greasiness.

  • Hemp Seed Oil (Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil): has a soothing effect on the skin and helps reduce irritation, redness and inflammation. It is perfect for most skin types as it moisturises without clogging pores.

  • Canola Oil (Brassica Campestris, Rapeseed, Oil): rich in vitamin E, an effective anti-oxidant for fighting free radicals, as well as omega 3 & 6 fatty acids which are effective in soothing dry, irritated skin.

BAR OF HOPE uses a range of botanicals (oils and powders) and clay for colour, scent, and a range of skin benefits.

  • Madder (Rubia Tintorum Root): a plant root powder that is one of the most effective natural dye options for a rich red-pink colour spectrum.

  • Pink Clay (Kaolin - French Pink): natural clay powder with many benefits beyond the colour. It helps to draw out skin impurities without stripping and causing dryness and helps smoothen skin.

  • Alkanet (Alkanna Tinctoria): a plant root powder, a great natural colourant for soap as it colours the soap a shade of purple without staining your skin or bathroom walls. It is pH sensitive so it starts off red in the oil, but turns to a rich purple with the addition of lye.

  • Bentonite: made from volcanic ash, this natural powder adds a wonderful smooth texture to soaps, and also has effective oil absorbing qualities.

  • Kawakawa (Macropiper Excelsum Leaf): a magical New Zealand native tree with many known healing properties including: relief from extremely dry, itchy skin and anti-inflammatory.

  • Kelp (Laminaria Digitata Powder): Kelp is great as a gentle natural exfoliator, but it's also a seaweed superfood bursting with anti-oxidants and skin nourishing nutrients.

  • Indigo Powder (Indigofera Tinctoria Root Extract): Indigo root powder has been used for thousands of years as a natural colourant for blue, grey and green hues.
  • Citric Acid: a naturally occurring citrus fruit acid which, when added to natural soap, helps reduce the amount of shower scum that builds up over time. Read more on how it does that in our FAQs (under Soap facts).

  • Rosemary Oleoresin Extract (Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf): this extract, not to be confused with rosemary essential oil, is a natural anti-oxidant. It is used to help preserve and prolong the life of all oils used in the soap, preventing them from going rancid.

  • Activated Charcoal (Charcoal Powder): a great natural option for absorbing and drawing out oil and dirt from skin without stripping it of too much oil.

  • Pumice Powder: this fully natural volcanic powder is an excellent exfoliator thanks to its abrasive, yet soft, make up.

  • Zinc Oxide: a naturally occurring white powder that is commonly used in nappy creams to form a protective barrier on skin, and in sunscreen as UV skin protection. In soap, it is used mainly to lighten the colour of the batter.

  • Pink Himalayan Salt (Sodium Chloride): along with providing gentle exfoliation, salt is also great for balancing and cleansing the skin.

  • Cornflour (Zea Mays Starch): helps anchor citrus essential oils in soap, also a vegan alternative to using silk for a silkier smooth soap bar.

  • Poppy Seeds (Papaver Somniferum Seeds): a natural exfoliant for a great wake-up morning scrub!

  • Distilled Water (Aqua): all BAR OF HOPE recipes use this purest form of water, meaning less soap scum is left in the shower.

  • Coconut Milk (Cocos Nucifera Milk): coconut milk in soap enhances its moisturising properties and helps soothe dry irritated skin thanks to its natural fatty acids. Also known to have impressive antibacterial properties.

  • Coconut Water (Cocos Nucifera Juice Water): helps give the soap hardness and a rich fluffy lather. Coconut water is also known to have anti-ageing effects on the skin.

  • Coconut Milk Powder (Powder of: Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Milk, Maltodextrin extracted from tapioca, Acaia fiber): this is a natural powdery mix used to lighten the colour of the soap batter, which can intensify pale colours.

  • Sodium Lactate: a natural salt mainly used in soap to help harden the bar and make it longer lasting. It is also a natural humectant, providing moisture to the skin. This is a perfectly safe natural ingredient - it is often used in food products as a preservative.

  • Cucumber Pulp (Cucumis Sativus Fruit): cucumber has many skin benefits thanks to its soothing and hydrating properties.

Essential oils are a natural option for adding scent to soap, thanks to the potency of the plants from which they were extracted. Additionally, each oil has added benefits, some are listed below:

  • Litsea (Litsea Cubeba Fruit): has a strong citrusy smell and is a natural mood lifter. It is also beneficial for the immune and digestive systems.

Lye (Sodium Hydroxide) is used in the soap making process, but well made soaps have no lye present in the final soap. The reaction between the oils and lye is called saponification and it is this process that creates soap, a natural compound with cleansing properties. Without lye in the process, there would be no soap, but instead just oils!

Soap is the most effective way to clean your skin and remove viruses, without stripping away its natural protective oil. You can read more about this on our FAQs page, under Soap Facts.
